RWE commissions Aldenhoven wind farm to power 24,000 households and invests in further turbines near Düren-Merken

(IN BRIEF) RWE has commissioned the Aldenhoven wind farm in North Rhine-Westphalia, featuring six 5.7 MW turbines on recultivated land at the Inden opencast mine, with the capacity to power 24,000 households. The project will provide up to €150,000 annually to local municipalities through revenue-sharing, while RWE prepares to build two additional 7 MW turbines near Düren-Merken next year. With 249 MW of wind energy already installed in the Rhenish lignite area and 77 MW under construction, the company continues to expand its role in Germany’s energy transition, highlighting onshore wind as a key driver of green growth.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 21-Aug-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE has officially commissioned the Aldenhoven wind farm in the district of Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, marking another step forward in the expansion of renewable energy in Germany. Located on recultivated land at the former Inden opencast mine, the site now hosts six wind turbines, each with a capacity of 5.7 MW, delivering a combined output of 34.2 MW. This capacity is sufficient to supply clean electricity to around 24,000 households.

The new wind farm not only contributes to the energy transition but also brings direct benefits to the local community. Surrounding municipalities receive a payment of 0.2 euro cents per kilowatt hour produced, which is expected to generate up to €150,000 annually in revenue. RWE has also confirmed its investment decision to construct an additional two 7 MW turbines near Düren-Merken, with construction scheduled to begin early next year.

Katja Wünschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, emphasized the importance of the Rhenish lignite area for renewable energy development:
“We regard this region as a key location for wind power. To date, we have installed 249 MW here and are currently building another 77 MW, with more projects already in the pipeline. The Aldenhoven wind farm illustrates how former mining land can be repurposed to generate sustainable electricity while creating value for local communities. It showcases structural change in action and highlights the strong cooperation between authorities, partners, and our dedicated RWE team.”

RWE is continuing to strengthen its domestic onshore wind portfolio, recognizing its vital role in Germany’s transition to renewable energy. Nationwide, the company currently operates 676 MW of onshore wind capacity and is constructing an additional 170 MW. With its headquarters in Essen and nine regional offices across Germany, RWE is committed to further expanding its footprint in both wind and solar power, positioning itself as a driving force in the country’s renewable energy sector.
