Alstom to Supply 26 Eco‑Designed Automatic Metros and CBTC Upgrade for Lyon’s Line D

Alstom to Supply 26 Eco‑Designed Automatic Metros and CBTC Upgrade for Lyon’s Line D

(IN BRIEF) Alstom will provide SYTRAL Mobilités with 26 MPL25 rubber‑tyred metro trains and fully upgrade the automation and signalling on Lyon Metro Line D. The €303 million contract covers new two‑car trainsets—compatible with Line B’s MPL16 units—featuring regenerative braking, eco‑design, high recyclability, enhanced accessibility, and built‑in cybersecurity. Simultaneously, Line D’s 13 km CBTC system will be updated to Alstom’s Urbalis™ standard, increasing capacity and reliability on the network’s busiest corridor. Manufacturing and system development will involve seven Alstom sites across France, underscoring the company’s domestic expertise and its global Metropolis™ and Urbalis™ solutions.

(PRESS RELEASE) SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, 31-Jul-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — On 30 July 2025, Alstom announced that it will deliver 26 next‑generation automatic rubber‑tyred metro trainsets to SYTRAL Mobilités and completely overhaul the signalling and automation systems on Lyon Metro’s busiest Line D. Valued at €145 million for the new rolling stock and €158 million for the control‑system upgrade, this package marks a pivotal phase in the city’s network modernisation plan.

Built and tested across seven French sites—from Valenciennes for train assembly to Saint‑Ouen for the Urbalis™ signalling software—these two‑car MPL25 trains match the design of the MPL16 fleet on Line B. Fully automated and capable of forming four‑car consists, each unit accommodates over 300 passengers. Features include expansive windows, refrigerated ventilation, LED interiors with dynamic passenger information displays, and accessible layouts for wheelchair users. An all‑electric regenerative braking system captures and returns energy to the network while greatly reducing brake‑dust emissions. The eco‑designed trains are 96 percent recyclable and comply with new European cybersecurity requirements.

Line D itself, the world’s first wide‑gauge automatic metro when it launched in 1991, will be refitted with Alstom’s Urbalis™ communications‑based train control (CBTC) solution—optimising headways and reliability on its 13 km route without platform doors. This upgrade builds on Alstom’s extensive CBTC experience, including the existing Urbalis system on Lyon’s Line B.

“Delivering these modern, energy‑efficient metros and state‑of‑the‑art automation is a milestone for SYTRAL Mobilités and Lyon’s commitment to smarter, greener mobility,” said Frédéric Wiscart, President of Alstom France. With over 2,000 digital‑mobility specialists in France, Alstom continues to lead global urban transit innovation through its Metropolis™ family of metros and Urbalis™ signalling portfolio.
