COVESA and ACEA Team Up to Standardise Onboard APIs for Commercial Vehicle Interoperability

(IN BRIEF) COVESA and ACEA have signed an MoU to co‑develop an industry‑standard onboard API for commercial vehicles, harmonizing data exchange across truck and bus manufacturers. The initiative extends COVESA’s Vehicle Signal Specification with a bespoke commercial‑vehicle data catalogue, accessed via the Vehicle Interface Service Specification protocols. By enabling consistent, secure data sharing, the partnership aims to improve fleet integration, efficiency and scalability, accelerating innovation in telematics and responding to regulatory requirements.

(PRESS RELEASE) BRUSSELS, 29-Jul-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — The Connected Vehicle Systems Alliance (COVESA) and the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) have formalized a partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding to drive interoperability across the commercial vehicle sector. This collaboration establishes a joint framework to create a standardized onboard API for trucks and buses, enabling seamless fleet management across multiple OEM platforms.

Building on COVESA’s existing Vehicle Signal Specification (VSS), the two organisations will co‑define an expanded data catalogue tailored to commercial vehicles and fleet operations. The new API will leverage COVESA’s Vehicle Interface Service Specification (VISS) transport protocols to deliver uniform access to vehicle signals and metrics. By harmonizing data exchange, the initiative seeks to streamline integration, boost operational efficiency and enhance scalability of telematics and fleet‑management solutions industry‑wide.

“Data underpins every aspect of modern commercial operations,” said Steve Crumb, Executive Director of COVESA. “Partnering with ACEA, we’re tackling the fragmentation that hinders secure, reliable data flows. Standardising how trucks and buses share information will deliver tangible value for fleet operators, OEMs and technology providers alike.”

Jocelyn Delatre, Head of Digital Policy at ACEA, added: “This MoU advances Europe’s mobility transformation by strengthening our global competitiveness. Standardising onboard APIs and aligning data definitions will accelerate innovation in fleet management, support evolving regulations and address shifting mobility demands across the continent.”
