FrieslandCampina Advances Sustainability with Updated Emissions Reduction Targets Approved by SBTi

(IN BRIEF) FrieslandCampina has made significant strides in its sustainability goals by receiving approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its updated emissions reduction targets. The company has refined its targets, breaking down emissions into FLAG and non-FLAG categories and aligning its goals with the Paris Climate Agreement’s 1.5°C trajectory. With a base year change from 2015 to 2020, the new targets focus on reducing Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions by 30.3% and 42.14%, respectively, by 2030. FrieslandCampina also aims for net climate-neutral production by 2050. The company will present its annual sustainability progress in February 2025, reporting on its updated goals in 2026 for the first time.

(PRESS RELEASE) AMERSFOORT, 4-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — FrieslandCampina is taking another bold step toward its sustainability objectives, as the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has officially approved the company’s revised and more ambitious near-term emissions reduction targets. In line with SBTi’s guidelines, FrieslandCampina has broken down its emission reduction targets across Scope 1, 2, and 3 into two categories: emissions from forestry, land use, and agriculture (FLAG emissions), and other emissions. These updated targets are designed to align with the Paris Climate Agreement’s goal of limiting global temperature rise to no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius.

The company has not only refined its emission targets but also adjusted the base year for emissions reporting from 2015 to 2020, enabling more accurate data tracking. From 2025 onwards, FrieslandCampina plans to report on an expanded range of emission sources.

The new emissions reduction targets, in alignment with a 1.5ºC climate trajectory, are as follows:

  • A 30.3% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and 3 FLAG greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, using 2020 as the base year.
  • A 42.14% reduction in absolute Scope 1, 2, and 3 non-FLAG (Energy & Industry-related) greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, also based on 2020 levels.

The Science Based Targets initiative is a globally recognized platform that helps companies set science-based climate goals. FrieslandCampina initially committed to aligning its emission reduction targets with climate science in 2020. These updated goals were assessed and approved by the SBTi in early 2025, following a comprehensive review of the latest climate science methodologies.

FrieslandCampina, a major player in the global dairy industry, understands the responsibility of balancing good nutrition with planetary health. The company recognizes that reducing the environmental impact of food production is critical, not only in addressing global warming but also in ensuring food security for the future. FrieslandCampina’s overarching goal is to achieve net climate-neutral production by 2050 at the latest.

On February 18, 2025, the company will present its annual figures for 2024, detailing progress on its sustainability initiatives and outlining the next steps toward achieving its tightened emissions targets. The company will report on these revised targets for the first time in 2026, covering the performance of 2025.
