(IN BRIEF) Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust has secured £1.1 million from the NIHR to upgrade its advanced 3T research MRI scanner, strengthening its partnership with the University of Liverpool in pediatric health research. Matched funding for ophthalmology equipment will establish a dedicated pediatric eye research facility, making Liverpool the only UK city with these technologies in a standalone children’s hospital. (PRESS RELEASE) LIVERPOOL, 14-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, a major research partner of the University of Liverpool, has received £1.1 million from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) to enhance its state-of-the-art 3T research MRI scanner. This funding will advance imaging capabilities, supporting Alder Hey’s collaborative pediatric research with the university. Additionally, matched funding for ophthalmology equipment will establish a specialized pediatric eye research facility, positioning Liverpool as the only UK city with such technology in a standalone children’s hospital.

This investment will bolster significant research initiatives like Children Growing Up in Liverpool (C-GULL), a longitudinal study aimed at improving child and family health in Liverpool and similar regions across the UK, and the Liverpool Institute of Child Health and Wellbeing, launched in October by Health Secretary Wes Streeting. These initiatives underscore the commitment of Alder Hey and the University of Liverpool to lead innovative child health research.

Dr. Dan Hawcutt, Director of Research at Alder Hey and a Reader in Paediatric Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Liverpool, emphasized the transformative impact of the funding. He highlighted that the MRI scanner and ophthalmology equipment would enable Alder Hey to lead pioneering studies, offering research capabilities not available elsewhere in the UK.

With this year’s additional £1.1 million funding, Alder Hey has now secured over £4 million from NIHR to support cutting-edge research in Liverpool, further enhancing the city’s reputation as a leader in pediatric healthcare research.
