(IN BRIEF) Alstom has introduced its new Coradia Stream trains, designed specifically for FGC’s upcoming airport link between central Barcelona and Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, set to launch in 2026. Built at Alstom’s facility near Barcelona, these eco-friendly, single-deck trains provide ample luggage space, advanced accessibility features, and real-time travel and airport information to enhance passenger convenience. The €177 million project includes 10 trains and a new maintenance depot, with trains running every 15 minutes, covering a 22.7-kilometer route in just over 20 minutes.

(PRESS RELEASE) SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, 6-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — At the Tomorrow Mobility World Congress in Barcelona, Alstom revealed the design of its new Coradia Stream single-deck trains, set to serve Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) with fast connections between central Barcelona and Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport starting in 2026. Developed and built at Alstom’s facility in Santa Perpètua de Mogoda, these trains have been tailored to meet the unique needs of airport-bound passengers, including ample luggage space and wide corridors for easy accessibility. Equipped with advanced safety features and real-time passenger information systems, the trains will enhance both security and comfort.

Each of the five-car Coradia Stream units will feature a total of 20 doors, seating for 209 passengers, and room for up to 656 occupants. Accessibility is central to the design, with step-free access, automatic ramps, dedicated spaces for passengers with reduced mobility, and two multipurpose areas for items like bicycles and strollers. Alstom has collaborated with the ONCE Foundation to ensure the trains meet universal design standards, making them accessible to all.

The trains will display real-time travel and airport information on 29 screens throughout each unit, with additional exterior LED screens for passengers on the platform. Designed to align with Alstom’s eco-design principles, these trains prioritize sustainable materials, energy efficiency, and recyclability. This commitment will support FGC’s mission of sustainable mobility, reducing road congestion and CO₂ emissions.

FGC awarded Alstom a €177 million contract for 10 trains, which includes maintenance services for 15 years. To support this, Alstom will construct a new maintenance depot in Barcelona, bolstering the site’s role as a major technology hub and employer in Catalonia, with over 1,000 workers.

The new service will run every 15 minutes and cover a 22.7-kilometer route with nine stations, ensuring a quick 20-minute connection between Passeig de Gràcia and Airport Terminal 1. Alstom’s Coradia train series, with more than 4,000 trains sold globally, incorporates cutting-edge green propulsion options, including hydrogen and battery technology for routes without electrified lines.
