WinGD Unveils Flexible LPG-Ready Engines to Bridge the Transition to Ammonia-Fueled Shipping

(IN BRIEF) WinGD has introduced a new option for its ammonia-fueled X-DF-A engines that allows them to run on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as a transitional fuel. This “pre-fit” option, called X-DF-P, offers ship operators flexibility as they prepare for the growing global ammonia trade. The engines will be available starting in 2027, allowing operators to adjust between LPG and ammonia depending on market needs. This move supports the development of multi-gas carriers, offering an adaptable solution for the emerging ammonia market.

(PRESS RELEASE) WINTERTHUR, 16-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Swiss marine power company WinGD has announced a new option for its X-DF-A ammonia-fueled engines, which allows them to initially run on liquified petroleum gas (LPG). This “pre-fit” solution is designed to appeal to ship operators constructing vessels for the growing global ammonia trade, with the ability to transport and run on LPG in the interim.

Dubbed X-DF-P, after propane, the primary component of LPG, the solution will be available for engine deliveries starting in 2027. It offers shipowners a flexible option, enabling engines optimized for ammonia fuel to operate on LPG with minimal adjustments. This flexibility is particularly useful as operators evaluate their future fuel strategies for vessels in the LPG and ammonia trades.

Sebastian Hensel, Vice President of R&D at WinGD, emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainable and innovative ship power solutions. He explained that while WinGD’s X-DF-A ammonia engine has already seen strong interest from bulk and gas carriers, the X-DF-P solution offers an important transitional option for operators unsure about the timing of the ammonia trade’s full impact.

The global ammonia trade is expected to expand significantly, driven by ammonia’s potential as a key energy carrier for transporting hydrogen from renewable energy production sites. The X-DF-P package allows ship operators to seamlessly switch between ammonia and LPG fuels, ensuring operational flexibility in the evolving energy market.

WinGD has already received multiple orders for its X-DF-A ammonia engines from operators looking to build multi-gas and large ammonia carriers. The X-DF-P design is tailored for vessels in these trades, with minimal modifications required for switching between LPG and ammonia.

With engine sizes like 52- and 62-bore under development, WinGD is positioning itself at the forefront of future-proof ship power solutions.
