Thales Secures Contract to Supply Advanced Power Systems for KNDS Leopard 2 A8 Tanks

(IN BRIEF) Thales has been awarded a contract by KNDS to supply High-Power Solid-State Power Distribution Boards (SSPDB) for the Leopard 2 A8 tanks. These SSPDBs will enhance the tanks’ power management capabilities, offering protection against overcurrent and short circuits, while enabling flexible, smart power distribution for different mission scenarios. Initial deliveries are expected by Q3 2024, with several hundred units to follow by 2027.

(PRESS RELEASE) LA DÉFENSE, 16-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Thales has been awarded a contract by KNDS to supply High-Power Solid-State Power Distribution Boards (SSPDB) for the Leopard 2 A8 tanks, ensuring efficient and intelligent power management for the next generation of armored vehicles. These compact and scalable SSPDBs, developed by Thales, offer protection against overcurrent and short circuits, while allowing smart power distribution based on mission requirements.

The SSPDBs, rated up to 160A per channel, include integrated sensors for current, temperature, and voltage. They provide flexibility with pre-programmed or real-time selectable profiles, allowing for optimized power usage in various operational scenarios. Thales and KNDS engineering teams collaborated closely to customize the SSPDBs for the specific needs of the Leopard 2 A8, demonstrating agility in adapting the solution within a short time frame.

Initial deliveries of SSPDBs will begin as early as Q3 2024, with several hundred units expected to be supplied by 2027. Thales will leverage its established manufacturing and testing capabilities to meet KNDS’s requirements under this contract.

Martin Bernhardsgrütter, Country Director of Thales Switzerland, expressed pride in the partnership: “Thales has over 20 years of experience in developing power systems for protected vehicles. We are honored to be part of this project with KNDS and look forward to continuing our strong collaboration.”
