Arkema Earns ISCC PLUS Certification for Changshu Site, Expanding Sustainable Resin Production in Asia

(IN BRIEF) Arkema has achieved ISCC PLUS certification for its Changshu production facility in China, allowing the company to introduce a new range of bio-attributed waterborne acrylic resins and additives for sustainable coating applications. Using the mass balance approach, Arkema can progressively replace fossil feedstocks with renewable materials, reducing its carbon footprint and fostering circularity. This certification adds to Arkema’s existing certified sites in the US, Europe, and China, supporting its sustainability strategy and meeting growing demand for eco-friendly materials in sectors like new energy, e-mobility, and building efficiency.

(PRESS RELEASE) COLOMBES, 7-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Arkema, a global leader in specialty materials, has achieved ISCC PLUS certification for its Changshu production facility in China, marking a significant step in its sustainability efforts. This certification supports the company’s ability to offer a new range of bio-attributed waterborne acrylic resins and additives in Asia. The mass balance approach used in the production process allows for the gradual replacement of virgin fossil feedstocks with renewable-based sources, contributing to a reduced carbon footprint and promoting circularity. These sustainable products will be especially beneficial in fast-growing sectors such as new energy, e-mobility, building efficiency, and living comfort.

The certification at the Changshu site complements Arkema’s existing bio-based resins and additives portfolio, which already includes solutions with up to 100% bio-based content. It also builds upon previous ISCC PLUS certifications at Arkema’s facilities in the US, Europe, and other sites in China, such as Nansha and Taixing. This expansion aligns with Arkema’s broader strategy to accelerate the transition to sustainable solutions across various coating technologies, including high solids, waterborne, and UV/LED/EB systems.

Heidi Wang, General Manager of Rheology/Specialty Additives and Coating Resins for Arkema in Greater China, emphasized that the mass balance certification reinforces the company’s commitment to mitigating climate change and advancing resource preservation through renewable-based solutions. Arkema’s growing certified supply chain guarantees that its sustainable feedstocks meet ISCC+ standards, ensuring transparency and traceability throughout the production process.

The new mass balance certification at the Changshu site will help Arkema meet rising demand for more eco-friendly materials in Asia while offering its customers opportunities for product differentiation based on sustainability.
