Stellantis and Dürr Collaborate on Energy-Efficient Paint Shop, Boosting Electric Vehicle Production in Morocco

(IN BRIEF) Stellantis is partnering with Dürr to build an energy-efficient paint shop at its Kenitra site in Morocco, doubling the facility’s capacity for electric and hybrid vehicle production. The plant will utilize advanced technologies like the EcoInCure electric oven, which reduces carbon emissions by 40%, and Dürr’s RoDip® rotational dip process, which conserves water, chemicals, and energy. Additionally, Stellantis is repurposing robots and equipment from other plants to maximize resource efficiency. This sustainable approach allows Stellantis to expand production while reducing its environmental footprint.

(PRESS RELEASE) BIETIGHEIM-BISSINGEN, 7-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Stellantis has partnered with Dürr to build an energy-efficient, state-of-the-art paint shop at its Kenitra site in Morocco, with the goal of doubling its production capacity for electric and hybrid vehicles. This new facility is designed to be environmentally friendly, utilizing advanced technologies such as Dürr’s EcoInCure electric oven and repurposed robots from Stellantis’ other plants to minimize resource use. The paint shop will support the Peugeot, Citroën, and Fiat brands, handling up to 30 vehicle bodies per hour—matching the capacity of the original Kenitra plant that Dürr built in 2019.

Key to this environmentally conscious project is Dürr’s RoDip® rotational dip process, which provides optimized corrosion protection with significantly reduced water, chemical, and heating energy usage. The system’s efficient design cuts immersion tank length and reduces the volume of chemicals required, leading to lower operating costs.

The introduction of the EcoInCure electric oven at the Kenitra facility is a first for Stellantis, allowing for uniform heating and cooling of vehicle bodies from the inside out. This innovation cuts heating time by up to 30%, resulting in 40% fewer carbon emissions compared to gas-powered alternatives. The plant operates using green electricity, contributing to Stellantis’ sustainability goals by reducing its overall carbon footprint.

In addition, Stellantis is repurposing existing robots and application technology from other plants to enhance efficiency. These robots, equipped with Dürr’s EcoBell2 applicators, enable the plant to implement wet-on-wet painting techniques, saving both time and energy. Other technical equipment, including air supply units and heaters, has also been relocated from European facilities to Morocco, showcasing a sustainable approach to resource optimization while ensuring high-quality vehicle coatings.

This collaboration between Dürr and Stellantis emphasizes a commitment to energy efficiency, sustainability, and resource reuse, setting a new standard for automotive production facilities.
