ORLEN Expands Sustainable Fuel Portfolio with HVO100 Biofuel Sales in Germany

HVO100, a second-generation biofuel produced from vegetable oils and waste materials like used cooking oil from the food and hospitality sectors, offers significant environmental benefits. Specifically, it has the capacity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 90% compared to traditional fossil fuels. The fuel is compatible with most diesel engines without requiring any modifications. Plans to introduce HVO100 to the Polish market are in progress, with the necessary legislative work on fuel quality standards currently underway.

At present, HVO100 is being sold at two locations in Germany—Boizenburg on the Elbe and Achim near Bremen—with plans to extend availability to additional stations in the near future. ORLEN is also laying the groundwork for sales in the Czech Republic, where the regulatory framework is already established. Wholesale distribution in the Czech Republic is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2025, with the Paramo terminal in Pardubice preparing to serve as the main distribution hub. Retail sales of HVO100 are also being considered as part of this expansion.

In Poland, legislative efforts are ongoing to set quality standards for HVO100, which will be overseen by the Trade Inspection. The fuel is already available in a number of other European nations, including Finland, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Latvia.

Simultaneously, ORLEN is progressing on the construction of an HVO production facility in Płock. Once completed, the plant will have the capacity to produce 300,000 tonnes of biocomponents per year, using a variety of lipid feedstocks, such as rapeseed oil and used cooking oil. The project is expected to cost around PLN 600 million. ORLEN is also planning to build additional infrastructure at the Płock site to produce HEFA bio-components, which will be used in the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

This initiative reflects ORLEN’s broader strategy to expand its portfolio of sustainable fuels and significantly reduce its carbon emissions, as outlined in its long-term objectives.
