AFRY to Lead Renewable Power Design for Australia’s Landmark Green Ammonia Project

(IN BRIEF) Allied Green Ammonia (AGA) has appointed AFRY as the Owner’s Engineer for its flagship green ammonia project in Australia’s Northern Territory. The project will use 100% renewable energy, combining 4.75 GW of solar power and battery energy storage to run a 3 GW hydrogen electrolyser. This will produce nearly one million tonnes of green ammonia annually, reducing global carbon emissions by 1.8 million tonnes each year. AFRY will design the renewable power and distribution system, contributing to decarbonization in industries like aviation, shipping, and heavy industry. The project is expected to generate thousands of local jobs while promoting sustainable energy in the region.

(PRESS RELEASE) SOLNA, 30-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Allied Green Ammonia (AGA) has selected AFRY as the Owner’s Engineer for its ambitious green ammonia project in Australia’s Northern Territory. AFRY’s responsibilities will include designing a renewable power and distribution system to supply energy to the facility, which will produce green ammonia using 100% renewable energy. The project is expected to play a significant role in reducing carbon emissions, particularly in industries that are hard to electrify, such as shipping, aviation, and heavy industry.

AGA’s renewable power plant will combine 4.75 GW of solar energy with battery energy storage to power a 3 GW hydrogen electrolyser facility, producing nearly one million tonnes of green ammonia annually. This output will prevent 1.8 million tonnes of global carbon emissions every year.

AFRY’s work will involve reviewing the engineering design of the solar farm, electrical systems, and the integration of a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The solar farm will provide low-cost renewable energy, and the BESS will help manage energy generation, storing power produced during the day for use in the evenings and mornings, improving the efficiency of hydrogen and ammonia production.

Alfred Benedict, Managing Director of AGA, praised AFRY’s expertise in large-scale renewable projects, especially in the Asia-Pacific region. AFRY’s Regional Director, Petteri Härkki, expressed pride in contributing to the project, citing AFRY’s extensive experience with solar power, battery storage, and green hydrogen and ammonia projects.

AGA’s green ammonia plant, supported by local and national government stakeholders and indigenous communities, is expected to create thousands of jobs and significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions. AFRY, which has been recognized as “Technical Advisor of the Year” for the APAC region, continues to expand its role in sustainable energy projects across Asia-Pacific.
