Energiekontor and Salzgitter Flachstahl Sign Pioneering Power Purchase Agreements for Solar Energy in Germany

(IN BRIEF) Energiekontor AG and Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH have signed long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) for two solar park projects in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Energiekontor will supply Salzgitter with over 120 gigawatt-hours of green electricity annually, aiming to cut CO2 emissions by nearly 84,000 tonnes each year. The projects, with a total capacity of about 113 megawatts, received building permits in 2023 and are set for commissioning by mid-2026. The collaboration supports Salzgitter’s efforts to transition to climate-neutral steel production through its SALCOS® program.

(PRESS RELEASE) SALZGITTER, 25-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Energiekontor AG, a prominent developer of wind and solar energy projects in Germany, has teamed up with Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH to establish their inaugural long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) for two solar parks in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. These projects, now set for construction, will enhance Energiekontor’s portfolio post-commissioning.

The building permits for the solar parks were secured in 2023, and both projects have reached financial closure, paving the way for construction to commence. With a combined capacity of approximately 113 megawatts peak, the parks are scheduled to be operational by mid-2026.

Under the new agreements, Energiekontor will provide Salzgitter Flachstahl with over 120 gigawatt-hours of green electricity annually, potentially reducing CO2 emissions by nearly 84,000 tonnes each year. The contracts, developed in collaboration with Pexapark, offer both parties significant planning security and contribute to Germany’s industrial decarbonization efforts—a crucial component for meeting climate targets.

Salzgitter’s SALCOS® program is a cornerstone of its shift toward climate-neutral steel production, using green electricity to generate hydrogen that will replace coal in traditional processes, thus minimizing emissions. Energiekontor’s CEO, Peter Szabo, expressed pride in supporting Germany’s industrial transformation through renewable energy supply, while emphasizing the importance of partnerships that enable a successful energy transition without reliance on state subsidies.

Ralph Schaper, Salzgitter Flachstahl’s Head of Energy Management, highlighted the agreements as a significant move towards building a sustainable electricity portfolio and diversifying supply sources, particularly in today’s volatile market landscape.
