Henkel Introduces Bonderite M CR 1405 for Efficient and Sustainable Metal Treatment

(IN BRIEF) Henkel has launched Bonderite M CR 1405, a RoHS-compliant product that integrates metal passivation and pretreatment into a single step, enhancing efficiency and sustainability in color coating processes. This innovation reduces energy and water consumption by eliminating the need for separate pretreatment and cleaning stages. The chromium III-based product provides excellent corrosion resistance and is compatible with various primers, aligning with Henkel’s commitment to sustainable and efficient industrial processes.

(PRESS RELEASE) DÜSSELDORF, 29-Jul-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Henkel Adhesive Technologies has unveiled Bonderite M CR 1405, an innovative RoHS-compliant product that combines metal passivation and pretreatment in a single step, significantly enhancing sustainability and process efficiency in color coating processes. This new development eliminates the need for separate pretreatment and passivation stages, providing excellent corrosion resistance and simplifying the overall workflow.

Traditionally, metal surface treatment involves separate lines for pretreatment and passivation, with subsequent cleaning and rinsing stages to remove rust preventive (RP) oil before painting. Henkel’s Bonderite M CR 1405 streamlines this process by serving as both passivation and pretreatment. After passivation, coils can go directly to painting or the end user, requiring only hot water rinsing to remove contaminants. This innovation leads to substantial savings in energy and water usage, as it eliminates the need for chemical cleaners typically used at high temperatures.

Bonderite M CR 1405 is a chromium III-based passivation pretreatment that combines the advantages of both processes, ensuring high paint adhesion and corrosion resistance without additional treatments. It is compatible with both chromium-based and chromium-free primers, making it versatile for various applications.

The product meets stringent performance expectations, offering high corrosion protection and complying with the RoHS directive, which bans hexavalent chromium in Europe. Tests have shown that it provides more than 96 hours of blank corrosion resistance on galvanized and Galvalume substrates and up to 800 hours of salt spray resistance with chromium primers.

Henkel’s new product aligns with its commitment to sustainability by reducing process steps and associated resource consumption. “Enabling safer, cleaner, and more efficient processes is at the heart of our business,” said Volker Mansfeld, Vice President Industry EIMEA at Henkel Adhesive Technologies. “Together with our customers, we strive to rethink design and processes to identify opportunities for sustainable innovation and defossilization of the industry while delivering the highest performance.”
