Siemens Empowers Industries with Dedicated In-House 5G Infrastructure

Private industrial 5G infrastructure for the deployment of a local 5G network

(IN BRIEF) Siemens has introduced its own private 5G infrastructure for industrial applications. This in-house solution enables industrial companies to establish their localized 5G networks tailored for automation needs. Siemens’ private 5G networks offer seamless integration with various devices, including tablets and VR glasses, and can be deployed flexibly, even in challenging scenarios where laying cables is impractical. The infrastructure has been extensively tested and is available in Germany, with plans for global expansion. Salzgitter AG, a German steel group, is among the first adopters. Siemens’ private 5G networks, known as campus networks, provide companies with data control and customization options for specific applications.

(PRESS RELEASE) NUREMBERG, 28-Sep-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Siemens AG (ETR: SIE), a German multinational conglomerate and Europe’s largest industrial manufacturing company, is making a groundbreaking entry into the 5G landscape with the launch of its in-house developed private 5G infrastructure, tailored to meet the unique needs of industrial customers. This innovative solution empowers industrial enterprises to establish localized 5G networks optimized for automation applications.

“By building their own 5G networks, industrial companies are launching the next stage of connected production,” says Axel Lorenz, CEO of Process Automation at Siemens. “5G is crucial for applications like mobile robots, autonomous logistics, and driverless transport systems in factories. Siemens’ private 5G infrastructure also gives users sole control over the data in their 5G network at all times, and they can custom-configure the network for their applications.”

The capabilities of Siemens’ private 5G network extend beyond traditional applications and include seamless integration with connected tablets, virtual reality (VR) glasses, and smart tools. Moreover, it offers flexibility in deploying edge devices, making it ideal for challenging scenarios like brownfield applications where laying cables is impractical. Unlike other wireless technologies, Siemens’ private 5G networks operate on licensed frequency bands, ensuring interference-free performance.

Siemens’ comprehensive 5G infrastructure comprises a 5G core and a radio access network (RAN), encompassing the central unit (CU), distributed unit (DU), and radio units (RUs). A variety of 5G end-devices can connect to this infrastructure, facilitating communication within the private network. Designed to withstand harsh industrial environments, this all-in-one 5G solution has undergone extensive testing in real production settings, including Siemens’ Karlsruhe production site, ensuring its reliability and suitability for industrial applications.

The private Siemens 5G infrastructure is now available in Germany, with plans to expand to other countries. Salzgitter AG, a German steel group, is among the first pilot customers to adopt this complete 5G solution. “We don’t just want to build any 5G network, we want an industrial 5G that meets the enormous requirements of the steel industry,” says Gerd Baresch, Chief Technology Officer at Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH. “Wherever we need to wirelessly transmit data reliably and securely – from real-time camera images to safety-relevant emergency-stop signals for driverless transport systems – we need future-proof communication technology. Siemens has been a longstanding reliable partner for network solutions, and this is precisely why we decided to work with them.”

Siemens’ private 5G networks, also known as campus networks, offer several advantages for industries. These networks are localized, allowing companies to customize them according to their specific requirements. Furthermore, private 5G networks grant companies full control over their data by utilizing their own local 5G spectrum. Siemens has been offering industrial 5G routers since 2021, such as the SCALANCE MUM853-1 and MUM856-1, enabling efficient wireless connectivity for robots, AGVs, and other industrial devices.

Siemens is pioneering the way forward with its private 5G infrastructure, empowering industrial enterprises to harness the potential of 5G technology within their premises while maintaining data security and reliability.
