Electricity Interconnection: VINCI Wins Contract for France-Spain Power Link

(IN BRIEF) VINCI, in collaboration with VINCI Energies, VINCI Construction, and Hitachi Energy, has been awarded a contract by Electricity Interconnection France-Spain (INELFE) to construct two ground stations for an electrical interconnection project between France and Spain. The stations will convert alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) and will be connected by a 400 km cable, including a significant portion submerged in the Bay of Biscay. The interconnection will enable the exchange of energy between the two countries and enhance power supply reliability while facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources. VINCI will handle the civil engineering and electrical works, while Hitachi Energy will provide the HVDC technology. The project is expected to be completed by 2028.

(PRESS RELEASE) PARIS, 15-Jun-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — VINCI (EPA: DG), a global player in concessions, energy and construction businesses active in nearly 120 countries, in partnership with VINCI Energies, VINCI Construction, and Hitachi Energy as the lead, has secured a contract from Electricity Interconnection France-Spain (INELFE) for the construction of two ground stations facilitating the conversion of electrical energy. INELFE is a joint venture between Red Eléctrica, the operator of the Spanish electricity transmission network, and RTE, the operator of the French electricity transmission network, responsible for cross-border connections.

These ground stations, located in France and Spain, will convert alternating current (AC) from the electrical networks into direct current (DC). Connected by a 400 km cable, including 300 km of submarine cable in the Bay of Biscay, the interconnection will facilitate energy exchange between the two countries with a total capacity of 2 GW.

The new interconnection project aims to enhance power supply reliability, promote the integration of renewable energy sources into the grids, and contribute to the overall efficiency of the system.

Under the contract, VINCI will be responsible for the design and construction of the civil engineering and electrical works of the stations, representing an approximate value of €300 million. Hitachi Energy will provide the High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology for the project. The completion and delivery of these ground stations are anticipated by 2028.
