LONDON, 07-Aug-2017 — /EuropaWire/ — ABP Humber has just conducted its second recruitment day, as it looks to fill 40 new positions which have opened up across the region.
The event, which took place at the CATCH facility in Stallingborough, was aimed at the assessment and recruitment of Port Operative staff who will have the opportunity to be appointed into multiple new positions across terminals in Immingham & Hull.
The candidates had already gone through a shortlisting process as 400 people had originally applied for the positions and ABP had the challenge of whittling these down to the 96 candidates who attended the session.
ABP recently identified that an additional workforce is required on the Humber as a management decision was made to reduce the company’s reliance on transient third party labour and grow its own dedicated in-house team.
Although third party labour still has a place to help run the ports, the advantages of building permanent teams will ensure better customer service, teamwork and camaraderie.
The candidates were asked to take part in three activities on the day, including an interview and networking session, a port operations exercise and a health and safety exercise.
Chris Bell, Group Head of Recruitment for ABP said: “We have received feedback in the past from people who have said that they weren’t aware that they could apply for a job in the port industry, they thought they had to have a family member working there to get them in. We want to change that perception and because of that, we’re changing the way we recruit.”
Jane Spencer, Head of Human Resources for ABP Humber: “Whilst a technical skillset is important, we are really looking at the attitude and behaviour of our new recruits. We have designed an additional assessment to include a scenario about the role and also responses to typical port safety incidents, just to see how the candidates get on with situations which may be out of the norm to them.”
