BERLIN, 29-Sep-2016 — /EuropaWire/ — On the occasion of the “Year of Germany in Mexico 2016/2017”, the 14th Morelia International Film Festival (October 21-30, 2016), with the support of the Goethe-Institut, is dedicating an entire programme to the Berlin International Film Festival (see Press Release from June 27, 2016).

The jointly curated selection of films has been completed. The Berlinale Spotlight will be presenting a wide-ranging programme of feature-length fiction films, documentaries and short films. Not only the Competition, but also other Berlinale sections – the Panorama, Forum, Generation, Perspektive Deutsches Kino, Berlinale Shorts and Retrospective – will be showing films from the programme of the Berlin International Film Festival 2016. Among the highlights are a number of prize-winning films, including the winner of the Golden Bear 2016, Fuocoammare (Fire at Sea) by Gianfranco Rosi.

“The Goethe-Institut is delighted to support the Berlinale Spotlight within the scope of the ‘Year of Germany in Mexico’. This is an important component in the extensive film programme of this initiative as well as a symbol of our worldwide collaboration with the Berlinale”, says Johannes Ebert, Secretary General of the Goethe-Institut.

The Berlinale Spotlight will also be dedicating a retrospective to director, screenwriter, actor and producer Reinhold Schünzel. The German filmmaker made several masterful German film comedies, including Viktor und Viktoria (Victor and Victoria, 1933), before emigrating to the USA in 1937.

Director and actor Sebastian Schipper has been invited as Special Guest of the Morelia International Film Festival and will present three films in the Berlinale Spotlight. One of them, Victoria (2015), was the winner of the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution at the Berlinale 2015; it also won Best Feature-length Fiction Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Cinematography and Best Music at the German Film Awards in the same year.

“We gratefully thank the Morelia Film Festival and especially its director, Daniela Michel, for the invitation. Our thanks also go to the Goethe-Institut for supporting the Berlinale Spotlight. The Federal Foreign Office’s ‘Year of Germany in Mexico’ is a great occasion to intensify the cultural exchange”, says Berlinale Director Dieter Kosslick.

Berlinale Director Dieter Kosslick and other festival representatives will present the Berlinale Spotlight.
