(PRESS RELEASE) COVENTRY, 12-Jun-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — The Flame of Friendship Torch Relay, a collaborative initiative between the University of Warwick and 63 Coventry schools, is nearing its Grand Finale event on 8th July with less than 20 stops remaining on its journey.

Commencing with a captivating launch ceremony at Coventry Cathedral on 2nd February, the relay saw Team GB Water Polo player Amelie Perkins leading a procession to Southfields Primary School, marking the start of an inspiring journey.

Having visited 49 schools, including prominent ones like John Gulson Primary and Sidney Stringer, the custom-made torch is now set to traverse its final 14 schools before reaching the University for the Grand Finale. Over 1000 Coventry students and teachers are anticipated to line the campus roads and join a procession following the torch, culminating in a vibrant celebration at Butterworth Hall, Warwick Arts Centre.

During the event, members of the Royal Opera House will lead the students in an Olympic-themed dance, bringing a festive atmosphere to the occasion. The event will be live-streamed to all participating schools, ensuring widespread participation and enjoyment.

Kerry Baker, Associate Director at the Warwick Institute of Engagement, expressed enthusiasm for the remarkable journey and anticipated celebrations on the 8th July, highlighting the project’s significance in fostering unity among Coventry schools.

Organized by Rebecca Bollands, Deputy Head at Earlsdon Primary School, and supported by the Warwick Institute of Engagement on behalf of the University of Warwick, the Flame of Friendship Torch Relay embodies the spirit of collaboration and camaraderie ahead of the Olympic Games.
