Swedish Defence University: six-month executive course for 16 Indonesian military officers and engineers concluded

STOCKHOLM, 18-Aug-2017 — /EuropaWire/ — Defence and security company Saab, the Swedish Defence University and the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) have concluded an intensive educational course for 16 Indonesian military officers and engineers from the Indonesian defence industry.

On 16 August 2017 a ceremony was held in Jakarta to mark the successful completion of the latest Saab-sponsored education initiative for Indonesia. In March 2017 a group of 16 students embarked on a six-month executive course entitled ‘Technology Forecasting and Long-Term Defence Planning’ as a part of the Saab scholarship programme, in cooperation with the Swedish Defence University. All of the students have now completed their studies and received their certificates.

The course comprised lectures, discussions, site visits and a final project; all delivered in English. The participants visited four cities in Sweden to evaluate different Saab technologies and production techniques. They also attended a series of lectures at the Swedish Defence University’s Stockholm campus. At the end of the course the participants demonstrated a deeper understanding of technology development and application in the defence sector. They were required to analyse and describe the challenges in developing a system concept of operations, and conduct a detailed system evaluation using military technology assessment methodology, amongst other things.

“We are extremely pleased that all 16 officers and engineers have successfully completed such a demanding course. This is another great outcome for our Saab scholarship programme and for Saab’s continuing commitment to share knowledge and transfer technology to Indonesia,” says Anders Dahl, Head of Saab Indonesia.

The 16 participants in the course were each presented with an official certificate from the Swedish Defence University and Saab during the special closing ceremony.

To date, Saab has awarded 28 of a planned 50 scholarships to a variety of Indonesian citizens. The Saab scholarship programme for Indonesia partners with four of Sweden’s top technical universities to offer a range of education from full Master’s degrees to shorter, executive courses. There are still 22 scholarship opportunities remaining for Indonesian officers, engineers and students in the near future.
