Neste MY Renewable Diesel reduces emissions of Stara’s working machines in Helsinki, Finland

ESPOO, 11-Jul-2017 — /EuropaWire/ — As part of Europe’s largest coordinated advanced biofuels project BioSata, Neste provides Helsinki City Construction Services, Stara, with premium-quality, entirely waste and residue based Neste MY Renewable Diesel™ to be used in Stara’s working machines and trucks. With this, Neste takes part in the internationally significant project in which the machinery and commercial vehicles operated by the City of Helsinki and bus services commissioned by Helsinki Region Transport HSL are aiming at a complete switch to renewable fuels by 2020.

“It is really remarkable to be able to make the air cleaner in Helsinki, the capital and the largest city in Finland. This will benefit the operators of Stara’s working machines and trucks and really everyone in the city. Like a recent study by Tampere University of Technology showed, local emissions may be reduced by dozens of percents overnight with the switch to renewable diesel,” explains Sam Holmberg, Vice President responsible for Neste’s Marketing and Services business area in Finland.

“We will start our step-by-step switch to renewable diesel in the beginning of July. In total, 200 Stara’s working machines and utility vehicles used in the Helsinki city center will be running on renewable diesel. Switching to biofuels will markedly reduce carbon dioxide and local particulate as well as nitrogen oxide emissions in the city center,” says Unit Director Sami Aherva, of Stara.

Neste MY Renewable Diesel, produced entirely from waste and residue raw materials for the Finnish market, is one of the biofuels used in the BioSata project. In addition to Stara, Helsinki Region Transport HSL and Neste, the project involves also the Ministry for Economic Affairs and Employment, the Finnish Petroleum and Biofuels Association and the Technical Research Centre of Finland VTT, as well as fuel providers St1, Teboil and UPM. VTT will conduct follow-up measurements covering issues such as fuel performance, local emissions, energy efficiency, and potential impacts on maintenance needs of the fleet. BioSata is part of the Helsinki region’s Smart & Clean project, which aims to achieve the most attractive zero-emission mobility in the world.

Neste MY Renewable Diesel in brief

Neste MY Renewable Diesel is a premium-quality fuel that has a chemical composition similar to conventional fossil diesel. Its use does not require any investments into new fleet or modifications to existing vehicles or working machines. It can be added to the fuel tank at any point, even when there is some conventional diesel left in the tank. In terms of all of its properties, Neste MY Renewable Diesel is better than or at least as good as the world’s leading fossil diesels, and much more environmentally sound. Its leading properties ensure cleaner combustion and reduce engine noise. Furthermore, its use reduces greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the use of working machines by up to 90 percent compared to the use of conventional diesel.
