Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) awarded Airbus Defence and Space and Luciad for their app to optimize the usage of airspace named CAPS (Collaborative Airspace Provision Service)

Prize offered by the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) for an application to optimize the usage of airspace

Toulouse, France, 22-12-2014 — /EuropaWire/ — Airbus Defence and Space in close cooperation with Luciad won the 2014 award for the Best in Class solution in the category System Wide Information Management (SWIM) based applications for a well-functioning and efficient European Sky Air Traffic Management (ATM) system. The winning application named CAPS (Collaborative Airspace Provision Service) shows how the usage of airspace in the Single European Sky concept can be optimized through the sharing of flight plan and airspace data fully in line with SESAR SWIM definitions, concepts and standards (like AIXM, FIXXM, WXXM for aeronautical, flight and meteorological information exchange). The SWIM Master Class Challenge is supporting the concepts and development of the SESAR Programme.

The challenge has been initialized in 2012 for the first time by the SESAR Joint Undertaking (SJU), which is the agency managing the SESAR programme. On a given platform companies can develop applications, web-services or potential infrastructure solutions in the SWIM environment. SWIM is regarded as the backbone of future ATM (Air Traffic Management) System(s) in the Single European Sky initiative, which is currently under development by numerous European companies and consortiums.

The SESAR SWIM Master Class is a chance for ATM stakeholders to share their experiences and best practices in implementing the concept of SWIM. By doing so, the Master Class has become an important global platform through which to build a critical mass of knowledge and excellence about SWIM and to translate the concept into real solutions.

About SESAR
SESAR is the technological and operational pillar of the Single European Sky (SES) initiative. The aim of the SESAR programme is to overcome fragmentation of the ATM system and deliver advanced technological and operational solutions with a view to bringing Europe’s ATM into the 21st century. SESAR is managed by the SESAR JU which coordinates and concentrates all relevant research and development efforts on ATM with a view to harmonising industrial implementation. The SESAR JU was founded by the European Union, EUROCONTROL, and has 15 member companies: AENA, Airbus, Alenia Aermacchi, DFS, DSNA, ENAV, Frequentis, Honeywell, Indra, NATMIG, NATS (En Route) Limited, NORACON, SEAC, SELEX ES and Thales. A total of 70 companies are participating in SESAR, including members, associate partners, and their affiliates and sub-contractors.

About SWIM
SWIM represents a complete paradigm change in how information is managed along its full lifecycle and across the whole European ATM system. Building on the best practices from different information communities, the goal of SWIM is to provide relevant and commonly understandable information in a more cost and time efficient way of exchanging information between providers and users. This means making the right air traffic management information available at the right time to aircraft, airports, air traffic controllers, and air navigation service providers, airline operation centres, military operation centres, ground vehicles, flow management centres, and weather service providers. The implementation of the SWIM concept will enable direct ATM business benefits to be generated by assuring the provision of commonly understood quality information..
