OTE Group joins European Commission on 5G research projects

Constant investment in the future through research and innovation

Paiania, Greece, 22-Jan-2016 — /EuropaWire/ — OTE Group participates in 4 research projects of the European Commission on designing and developing 5th generation (5G) technologies, infrastructure and services.

5G is the future of mobile communications. It is estimated to provide the subscriber with ultra-fast mobile internet speeds, even exceeding 1Gbps, consistent quality of service even on the go, as well as greater autonomy. It will also support the convergence of networks, services and equipment, and devices and systems internet connectivity (Internet of Things), since a single infrastructure will meet the increased demands[1] of industries such as automotive, energy, food, “smart” cities, governance, health care, construction and public transport.

The OTE Group is involved in 4 out of the 19 funded research projects[2] within the 5G Infrastructure Public Private Partnership (5G-PPP), through which the European Commission promotes research and development of 5G infrastructure and technologies, to strengthen the competitiveness of the European industry. By participating in the research projects, the OTE Group is expected to boost its technological excellence and upgrade the services provided to its customers, as it gains expertise in 5G from the early stages of the technology’s development and it actively participates in shaping future technology solutions, market applications and innovative business models. The projects in which the OTE Group is involved are the following:

SESAME: Small cEllS coordinAtion for Multi-tenancy and Edge services

The project aims at developing a unified virtual cloud-based platform, which will manage numerous small cells, while providing network facilities (i.e. self-x management) and supporting modern quality services. OTE is in charge of this project. (https://5g-ppp.eu/sesame/, http://www.sesame-h2020-5g-ppp.eu/)

COHERENT: Coordinated cOntrol and spectrum management for 5G HEterogeneous Radio accEss NeTworks

The main innovation of the project is the development of an integrated management system for heterogeneous wireless networks as a unified network entity through Software Defined Networking (SDN) and flexible management spectrum, allowing even better quality services. 5G-Xhaul: Dynamically Reconfigurable Optical-Wireless Backhaul/Fronthaul with Cognitive Control Plane for Small Cells and Cloud-RANs

The project aims to design and implement a flexible and low-cost backhaul/fronthaul network capable of supporting current and future optical and wireless access technologies (Sub-6 GHz, mm-Wave) and relevant services allowing the dynamic allocation of network resources. 5G-XHaul technologies will be integrated in a city-wide testbed in Bristol (UK). CHARISMA: Converged Heterogeneous Advanced 5G Cloud-RAN Architecture for Intelligent and Secure Media Access

The project aims to design and implement highly secure cloud infrastructure and spectral efficiency, low energy consumption and enhanced performance (network latency less than 1ms), enabling to support e-health services and wellness monitoring, Internet of Things and smart cities. With Deutsche Telekom’s participation in 4 additional research projects and the substantial contribution of the OTE Group, the Deutsche Telekom Group is involved in a total of 8 out of the 19 5G-PPP projects, dynamically promoting R&D for the benefit of both its customers and Europe.

The OTE Group is a pioneer in technological advances and is by far the largest investor in telecommunications infrastructure in Greece. The Group currently participates in a total of 20 innovative funded research projects, and the OTE New Technologies Laboratories evaluate tomorrow’s technologies and telecommunications equipment.
