NORMA Group, Plan International launch social project in Brazil

MAINTAL, 07-Aug-2017 — /EuropaWire/ — NORMA Group, a global market leader in engineered joining technology, and the children’s aid organization Plan International are launching a social project in Brazil. The objective is to improve living conditions in the rural areas of Codó in the country’s Northeast. From the fall of 2017, newly constructed and repaired drinking water facilities in the state of Maranhão will give 200 families access to clean water.

“After our years of commitment in India, we want the next NORMA Clean Water project to contribute to better water supply in Brazil,” says Werner Deggim, CEO of NORMA Group. “As a manufacturer of water management products, we know the immense importance of clean drinking water and are therefore now also supporting the local communities in Brazil.”

Besides the access to clean water, 50 families will in addition benefit from newly-established vegetable gardens in schools and communities, providing healthy meals. Around 1,000 people will attend training courses on hygiene and health as well as human and children’s rights. NORMA Group designed the three-year project in collaboration with Plan International Deutschland e.V.

In the rural regions of Brazil, water is scarce, difficult to reach and often polluted. This especially concerns children, because they are weakened and then more prone to illnesses. “As young women and girls are traditionally in charge of getting water, they are in particular affected by the scarcity of water. Often, they have to walk long distances to get to a water source and therefore do not have time to attend school”, says Maike Röttger, Head of Plan International Germany e.V. “With the NORMA Clean Water project, we can sustainably improve this situation.”

Besides the provision of functioning drinking water systems with filter systems and water tanks, committees will be set up for community members to exchange ideas and take care of the service and maintenance of the systems in the long term. In the first NORMA Clean Water project, NORMA Group has worked on improving water supply and hygiene as well as repairing sanitation facilities at 50 schools in India since 2014. Around 14,400 schoolchildren and teachers have benefited from these measures so far in the greater Pune area.
