NCFB study and Rabobank’s practice find many family businesses have difficulty keeping younger generations involved with the business

17-4-2013 — /europawire.eu/ — Many family businesses have difficulty keeping younger generations involved with the business. Research reveals that it is precisely this younger generation of owners that plays a crucial role in the field of innovation. This is particularly true when it comes to the use of new technologies such as social media and modern insights on consumer behaviour. This generation’s external networks are also a breeding ground for innovation. Mirelle Pennings, Mid Corporates Director at Rabobank, made these statements in response to the PhD thesis by Ilse Matser who is a Professor of Family Business Management at Windesheim University of Applied Sciences.

Family businesses underestimate the potential value of their external network for the development of new products and services. This especially applies to family businesses in the retail sector that must make the transition from traditional sales to online sales.

The fact that an external network actually creates added value for family businesses is confirmed by the thesis written by Ilse Matser, who also serves as Director of the Dutch Centre for Family Businesses (NCFB).

Rabobank and the NCFB are going to work together in the coming years to further strengthen the position of Dutch family businesses. Ilse Matser: ‘We are delighted to welcome Rabobank as a partner, particularly because this partnership will give us the capacity to test our academic research in practice.’ The first step will entail Rabobank supporting NCFB member businesses in the process of expanding their activities internationally.
