KPN to increase capacity and speed of its 4G network in The Netherlands

Increasing capacity and speed 4G network. Increasing data allowance and speed of propositions

The Hague, Netherlands, 23-6-2014 — /EuropaWire/ — KPN announces to increase the capacity and speed of its 4G network in The Netherlands by starting the deployment of 4G on the 1800MHz frequency per 1 July 2014 and the activation of the next generation 4G technology, LTE Advanced, thereafter. KPN will be one of the first telecom operators in Europe to offer LTE Advanced on a commercial basis, which confirms its role as the leading provider of 4G services. KPN currently sees a growing demand for data in the Dutch mobile market and will therefore increase the data allowance and download speeds for a number of propositions.

Next step in 4G roll-out

During the first quarter of 2014 KPN reached nationwide 4G coverage in The Netherlands by utilizing the 800MHz frequency, allowing KPN to become the first Dutch operator to offer nationwide 4G services to its customers. The utilization of the 1800MHz frequency, together with the activation of LTE Advanced, is the next step in KPN’s 4G roll-out in The Netherlands.

Jacob Groote, KPN Vice President Mobile Operations explains: “LTE Advanced combines the 800MHz and 1800MHz frequencies enabling KPN to increase the capacity of its 4G network and the download speed to potentially 200Mbps in the future. With this important step, KPN meets customer demand for high speed mobile broadband.”

LTE Advanced will be deployed in cooperation with Ericsson and will initially be offered in Amsterdam, Schiphol, Rotterdam, Utrecht, The Hague and Eindhoven, where a large portion of KPN’s 4G customers reside.

Higher speeds and increased data allowance

A customer survey amongst 4G users shows a very high customer satisfaction rate and an increase in data usage of 2.5 to 4 times on 4G vs. 3G. As of 1 July 2014, all 4G customers of KPN and Hi will therefore get access to a higher download speed of up to 50Mbps. For most of the SIM-only propositions and a number of handset propositions, the data allowance will also be increased.

Erik Vercouteren, KPN Vice President Consumer Products: “With a larger data allowance and higher speeds, our KPN and Hi customers can fully utilize the advantages of our 4G network: nationwide coverage, speed and stability.”
