Kapsch TrafficCom presents integrated multi-application solutions for intelligent transportation systems at ITS European Congress, June 6-9 in Glasgow

At the ITS European Congress from June 6-9 in Glasgow, Kapsch TrafficCom shows progressions in how the expert for intelligent transportation systems is achieving its “Strategy 2020”. The strategy outlined in 2015 aims to develop new, integrated multi-application solutions, with an increased focus on end customers and an expansion of solutions and services from the highway to the city.

The company will present innovative solutions like DYNAC, its advanced traffic management system, the all new Connected Next on-board unit (OBU) with Bluetooth Smart, as well as the Kapsch eVignette (electronic vignette) solution. “With Connected NEXT we have created the opportunity for end customers to easily receive information from the OBU, or pay tolling fees via their smartphone. The eVignette is a more simple, efficient and convenient way for time-based tolling solutions than the uneconomic paper vignette. These and other innovative products puts our Strategy 2020 into practice,” says Georg Kapsch, CEO of Kapsch TrafficCom.

With the new Connected NEXT, Kapsch links the OBU to a smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth. This allows drivers to read and update the data stored in the OBU, as well as review and manage their toll payments. Data from the tolling system, such as account or traffic information, as well as voice messages are also retrievable. Paying toll fees has never been easier: money can be transferred via smartphone and a user-friendly interface makes the tolling processes and payments transparent to drivers. The compact design and the attractive branding possibilities of the NEXT OBU, that was awarded the Red Dot Design Award 2014, complete the innovative Connected NEXT solution, and make it a natural choice for every issuer that wishes to increase user acceptance of their DSRC charging system. The solution is fully compliant with the latest harmonized electronic toll collection specifications and standards such as A1, CESARE/PISTA, CARDME and EN 15509. It fully supports other applications such as Automatic Vehicle Identification, parking, city access and therefore offers advanced traffic management functions to simplify the utilization of road network for both drivers and authorities.

The next generation of road vignettes

Another convenient improvement for road users and authorities is offered through the eVignette solution of Kapsch, one of which being eliminating the costs of production and distribution of the physical vignette. After an online registration of the license plate number, the vignette is valid. As with the paper vignette, the driver can buy an eVignette for a period of time, such as a week or a year, right over their mobile devices or a web portal. Authorities are able to check the validity of the vignette, simply by reading the license plate via automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) and a check in the vignette data base. Data privacy is also ensured, through pre-processing and filtering of data at the roadside. Only data from potential violators will be transferred to the data centre for further processing, reducing data traffic between the roadside units and the data centre. All in all, the method offers lower costs and higher compliance to authorities and improved convenience for the road users.

Connected NEXT and the Kapsch eVignette are best-practice examples for the realization of Kapsch TrafficCom’s goals in becoming a fully integrated Intelligent Mobility Solutions (IMS) provider.

An integrated traffic concept
