The meeting will begin at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, 5 October, when the University’s rector, Hans-Jochen Schiewer, and Enno Aufderheide, Secretary General of the Humboldt Foundation, welcome the attendees. This will be followed by a keynote lecture on “Studying Fundamental Particles: The Quest for Precision at High Energies” by Fernando Febres Cordero. As the winner of the Humboldt Foundation’s 2014 Sofja Kovalevskaja Award, he currently heads a research group at the Institute of Physics of the University of Freiburg. The native Venezuelan is investigating the properties of known fundamental particles and searching for signs of unknown fundamental particles.

On Thursday, 6 October, the Humboldtians will visit some of the University’s institutes and report on the focus areas of their current research. The young researchers will also have the opportunity to network among themselves and with their German colleagues. The Humboldt Foundation will additionally present its profile and programmes to all interested parties in an information presentation at 3:30 p.m. (University of Freiburg, Room 1132, Kollegiengebäude I, Platz der Universität 3).

Most of this year’s participants come from the natural sciences (105), followed by 47 participants from the humanities and social sciences, and 23 from engineering. The majority of the foreign guests are from China (17), the USA (16) and India (13). Seven participants are currently conducting research in Freiburg.
