Alcatel-Lucent and T-Mobile Czech Republic successfully completed trial of 400G-speed data transport; paving the way for new high-speed ultra-broadband services

First Czech trial of 400G-speed data transport – using  existing network between Prague and Hradec Králové – to obtain an advanced technical solution for the delivery of high capacity services

PARIS, 26-5-2015 — /EuropaWire/ — Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) and T-Mobile Czech Republic have successfully completed a trial of 400 gigabits-per-second data transmission over an existing network in the Czech Republic, paving the way for new high-speed ultra-broadband services.

T-Mobile Czech Republic is rolling out mobile broadband services across the country and expects 97% of the local population to be covered by 3G and LTE networks, by the end of this year. The trial – over a distance of 320km – aimed to demonstrate the ability of T-Mobile’s existing network to meet increasing consumer demand for data capacity as well as provide even higher capacity enterprise and wholesale services in future.

The trial used Alcatel-Lucent’s 400G agile optical networking technology over T-Mobile’s existing dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) network infrastructure, demonstrating how optical networks are able to evolve to meet future demands without the need for huge infrastructure investments.

Key Facts:

  • For the trial, Alcatel-Lucent used its 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) together with the 400G Photonic Service Engine (PSE) over the 320km.
  • The 400G PSE – developed by Alcatel-Lucent’s research arm, Bell Labs – dramatically boosts the performance of today’s 100G networks, laying the foundation for 400G-speed transport in the future while minimizing space and power requirements.
  • Alcatel-Lucent’s 400G technology allows operators to scale without costly reengineering or the need to expand their footprint, enabling a fourfold increase in density over current 100G solutions.
  • 400G technology effectively enables the transmission of the data capacity equivalent of 88 Blu-ray Discs in a single second.

Quotes

Vladimir Klein, CTO of T-Mobile Czech Republic said: “Besides our existing commitments, delivering  high-bandwidth access via TeraStream, it’s also key for us to permanently verify new and innovative technology options. We always want to offer our customers the best user experience via technology leadership. Offering the fastest data speeds is a natural part of it. This 400G trial shows how advanced our network already is and that we are able to meet  higher bandwidth needs of our customers in the future.”

Alan Ilczyszyn, Territory Sales Manager of Alcatel-Lucent said: “This is the latest in a number of successful trials using our 400G technology and underlines our leadership in IP networking. These trials show the real application of our 1830 PSS DWDM optical transport network solution in allowing providers to smoothly evolve capacity and grow as their customer demands grow.”
